Technical Counsellor – Inland Navigation Vessels

About the role

The Danube Commission seeks a qualified Counsellor to provide expert technical advice on inland navigation vessels. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the role supports the Commission in shaping vessel standards, environmental policies, and safety regulations across the Danube basin.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain continuous liaison with Member State authorities, international bodies, and industry stakeholders.
• Draft Commission documents on vessel technical requirements, radar and radio systems, and modern navigation aids.
• Prepare regulations on the transport of dangerous goods and contribute to UNECE expert meetings (WP.15/AC.2).
• Develop guidelines for pollution prevention, air‑quality improvement, and greenhouse‑gas emission reduction on the Danube.
• Participate in updating the European Standard for Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels (ES‑TRIN) within CESNI.
• Support projects on low‑emission fuels, alternative propulsion, electrification, and renewable‑energy transport.
• Provide technical assistance to national administrations and fleet operators on innovation and implementation.

Required profile

• University degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, environmental engineering or a related field.
• Relevant professional experience in inland waterway vessel technology, safety standards, or environmental regulation.
• Demonstrated ability to work in an international, multi‑stakeholder environment.
