Software Engineering Manager - Java Backend Team

About the role

PTC is looking for a Software Development Manager in Budapest to lead a team of software engineers building backend systems mainly on a Java / Spring / Oracle / PostgreSQL stack. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on running a stable team and delivering reliably.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a team of 5-10 software engineers, including hiring, onboarding, performance reviews and day-to-day support
• Keep the team productive, focused and unblocked, and support engineers' technical and career growth
• Own delivery of features and improvements from planning to release, working with product and stakeholders on scope and timelines
• Track progress, manage risks and step in when things drift
• Review and guide design decisions within an existing monolithic system, ensuring code quality, consistency and maintainability
• Help the team make pragmatic decisions and avoid over-engineering
• Work with QA, product managers and other teams, and represent the team in planning and coordination discussions

Required profile

• Solid background in Java backend development (5-10+ years)
• At least 2 years of experience leading a team, or a strong tech lead ready to step up
• Experience with monolithic systems and maintaining existing production codebases
• Good understanding of Spring, relational databases and backend architecture
• Comfortable balancing hands-on technical work with people management

Nice to have

• Experience with both Oracle and PostgreSQL
• Familiarity with legacy systems and gradual modernization
• Experience improving development processes in a pragmatic way
